A lot of men arrive here having searched for 22 carat gold earrings. Almost none of them actually want 22KT. What they want is plain gold — no stones, no fuss — and ‘22 carat’ is simply the phrase Indians use for that.
Here is the honest jeweller’s answer. 22KT is soft. It bends, it scratches, and it will not hold a stone securely, which is why 22KT jewellery is almost always plain. For an earring worn daily, against a pillow and a collar and a phone, that softness is a real problem. We make plain gold in 14KT and 18KT instead — the same rich gold colour, considerably harder, and it holds its shape for decades rather than years.
And a related warning. If you find a ‘22 carat’ stud with stones in it at a low price, the stones are CZ or American Diamond, not diamond — sometimes the listing says so, often it does not. Nothing wrong with CZ. Everything wrong with not being told.

Cast gold leaves the mould dull. Bringing the shine up from inside the metal takes polishing, and every pass costs a little gold.
