Mother’s day is a day marked out on calendars world over to honour mums, and it can be traced all the way to the ancient Greeks and Romans when they held days to honour mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. The day was brought to life by a lady named Anna Jarvis in the year 1908 to honour mothers and the sacrifices they make for their children. The first Mother’s day was celebrated in a Methodist church and gained a lot of attention becoming an annual holiday. The day was also observed to give women the unbiased recognition they needed. The day took a liking to the masses and became a constant occurrence since then.
Different days have been observed in different parts of the world but as a general rule the 2nd Sunday of the month of May is considered to be mother’s day. Across the world mothers day is celebrated quite differently. In Thailand mother’s day is celebrated on the birthday of the current Queen Sirikit.
