Understand Diamond Colour

Diamonds, come in a wide range of colours. From the cool blues of the ocean to the warm yellows of the sun, diamonds come in all colours of the rainbow. In fact, yellow is the most common colour seen in diamonds. Common misconceptions many people have are that diamonds have to be colourless. Diamonds fall under two colour ranges, the normal and the fancy coloured range. The normal colour range, ranges from colourless to light yellow or light brown, after which it moves to the fancy colour range, where stones have greater depth of colour. When it comes to diamonds in the normal colour range, the more colourless they are, the rarer they become, which can also lead to an increase in price. While “colourless” diamonds are the most popular, they are just one category of diamonds. The other category of natural stones is known as “fancy colour diamonds.” Although relatively rare, they have been found in every colour of the spectrum.Fancy colour diamonds are not graded on the same colour scale as “colourless” or “white” diamonds. Rather, their value is derived by the color intensity that ranges from Light at the lower end to Vivid at the high end. The more intense or strong the colour appears, the more valuable the diamond. Colour intensity is the most important factor when purchasing a fancy colour diamond.

The colour grading starts from D all the way to Z. D being colourless, transparent and very white whereas Z is light yellow or light brown and can be seen quite clearly. Diamonds in larger sizes tend to reveal their colour more clearly thank smaller stones as there is an increase in its surface area. A diamond’s colour must be judged from a distance and from the top of the stone called the face- up view along with the bottom of the stone called the face down view, giving a clear indication of the colour range. Inclusions, sometimes, tend to affect the colour of a stone and when graded from both angles, the gemologist gets a clearer idea of the body colour of the gem.

At KuberBox we mostly use colours from the G-I colour grades in our jewellery, which offers our clients an affordable yet brilliant option for diamonds. As these colour grades look colourless face-up, when set in jewellery the stones prove to be very attractive. The G-I colour grades are noted to be colourless face up which might be something your shoppers are looking for.

FANCY COLOURED DIAMONDS

Yellow diamonds can be like the colours of the sun bringing sunshine and jovial feelings.
Pink diamonds symbolise love and are perfect for rings and pendants.
Fancy coloured diamonds are rarely as vivid as you are perhaps imagining but they command very high prices for their rarity. Natural vivid fancy coloured diamonds are generally seen in the auctions where collectors or jewellery houses buy stones for their collection. With companies marketing their stones effectively, new terms like cognac and champagne diamonds have gained a lot of attention in the retail sector. Fancy diamonds that come in pink colours are commonly found from the Argyll mine in Australia.

But How Do The Diamonds Get Their Colour?

Diamonds get their colours from impurities or distortions present within the atomic structure of the gem giving rise to its much-desired colours.

Colour in Diamonds
Yellow Nitrogen
Green Years of Radiation
Orange Thought to be a Distortion in the Crystal Lattice
Pink Lattice Distortion due to Intense Pressure and Heat
