• GIA -

Stands for Gemological Institute of America, and, is a nonprofit institute dedicated to research and education in the field of gemology and the jewellery arts. Founded in 1931, GIA’s mission is to protect all buyers and sellers of gemstones by setting and maintaining the standards used to evaluate gemstone quality. The institute does so through research, gem identification and diamond grading services and a variety of educational programs. Through its world-renowned library and subject experts, GIA acts as a resource of gem and jewellery information for the trade, the public and worldwide media outlets. The institute is headquartered in Carlsbad, California and operates out of 13 countries, with 11 campuses, 9 laboratories and 4 research centres worldwide. GIA is one of the biggest and most trusted of all the labs. Owing to their high certification fees and slow turn-around time, they are mostly preferred for solitaire size diamonds. GIA currently grades only loose stones in India and doesn’t grade and certify diamond studded jewellery. Therefore, if your customers demand GIA certified jewellery, you must know why you can’t provide them with the GIA certified jewellery. • IGI -

Stands for International Gemological Institute. International Gemological Institute (IGI) is a diamond, coloured stone and jewellery certification organisation. IGI is headquartered in Antwerp and has offices in New York City, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Bangkok, Tokyo, Dubai, Tel Aviv, Toronto, Los Angeles, Kolkata, New Delhi, Surat, Jaipur, Chennai, Thrissur, Ahmedabad, Shanghai, and Cavalese among many other countries and locations. Established in 1975, IGI claims to be the largest independent gemological laboratory worldwide. It also runs Schools of Gemology in several locations around the globe. IGI enjoys good popularity among customers of studded jewellery due to its stringent standards for diamonds. However, owing to their authoritarian procedures and slow turnaround, they are less preferred by the manufacturers. In KuberBox’s view, IGI is particularly more attuned to the needs of the high-capacity manufacturers who can promise a minimum business month on month. IGI may take anywhere between 2 days to 12 days to certify a piece of jewellery. That is the reason, they aren’t suitable for online jewellers like KuberBox where time is a critical factor.

• SGL -

Solitaire Gem Labs (SGL) is an independent international laboratory that provides professional gemstone identification and grading services to the gems & jewellery industry worldwide through its centers in London, Dubai, Jeddah, Riyadh, Mumbai (Bombay), Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Thrissur, Coimbatore, Pune, Jaipur and Kolkata. They are also the first international gemological laboratory to specialise in certifying diamond studded jewellery in the UAE, United Kingdom & India and to offer Mobile laboratory services all over the country for the same. SGL is one of the major players when it comes to certification of small and studded diamond jewellery in India. It is particularly a major player when it comes to the online jewellers in India. Most of India’s biggest jewellers use SGL’s services to certify and provide certified diamond jewellery to the customers. KuberBox also uses their services. SGL is known for their quick turnaround and reliable grading services while keeping with the technological advancements.

Certificates are essential as they help verify gemstones as each gemstone is checked and analysed with advanced gemological tools. Gemstone certificates should come with a natural or synthetic origin report, which means the gem lab has been able to determine if the gems in your jewellery piece are truly what they claim to be. The other factors that should be specified are the Variety and Species for coloured gemstones, this is because traders are often confused by misnomers in the market and can be either intentionally or unintentionally transfer this to the customer.
